The Independent Living Movement I
Posted by admin in Uncategorized on December 31st, 2009
Center Park of Seattle, Washington, USA, was founded by Ida May Daly, who had a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis. While suffering from this debilitating illness, she managed to get enough public and private donations to buy a huge square block of land near downtown Seattle - and go set it up so that certain people would have a place to actually thrive and live, instead of one in which to waste away and die. She didn’t like what institutionalized or hospitalized living does to people in reality, and how most such places preach an afterlife - involving how you have to die in this lifetime to achieve it.
Nowadays, almost all those Jewish, Catholic, Protestant, Buddhist, Hindu, Moslem, private enterprise or whatever institutions in America are united racially. This is due mainly to the efforts of various civil rights aficionados - and via coincidence of circumstances, Center Park is located in what in the 1980s was an African-American neighborhood. That was how the property values were low enough for Ida May Daly to be enabled to purchase the land in that neighborhood. It used to be white and Catholic, earlier – there still are some people from that time frame who live there, as I attended their major church once, and hostilities and frictions that are probably entirely gone by now, although I suspect impoverished people yet reside there.
In the 80s, I worked at Center Park in that neighborhood, and wondered deeply about life itself, being a newbie professional writer and artist, working my day job helping the disabled. I was a live-in personal care attendant, living with and doing daily activities with physically and mentally challenged people, mostly white ones, before the days of the Internet. Back then, they also had Christian study groups, to pass the slow time, and involvement in local and national politics, which was more to my crowd’s liking. I wasn’t much for Christian studies, being too Jewish influenced to ever see myself that way.
Being deeply involved with fragile people with distinctively human lives and bodies, ones which were not so spiritually suited for an afterlife, I used to be sad at how many long years ago, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. , alias Michael King, had to keep up such a “preachy” attitude of going on to another place to get rid of such a fallacy. He said he was heading for “the Promised Land,” which everyone disabled or handicapped I have ever met up here in the Pacific Northwest seems to think is indeed - Canada.
Dr. King himself, an African-American of long standing, and a pastor cum reverend at Ebenezer Baptist Church, far away from where we lived at Center Park, performed many of his duties far down in the American South - while we of this article were located in the American Northwest. Therefore I figured he probably meant something else by this catch phrase, “the Promised Land,” such as eternal peace, but many of the disabled I’ve met in the Pacific Northwest would like to live in Canada. It’s kind of an ongoing jest that “we” would all like to move up to the Promised Land, in this era of global warming.
The melting back of the glaciers up north does mean the expansion of the Northwest Territories, and it would be wonderful indeed to slowly be moving northward. The Great Seal of King County, as of 1986, sports the fine but somewhat overweight head of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. , in support of all the many things he did for civil rights. This includes work on behalf of the handicapped and disabled, although strangely enough we have yet to see much of a united effort on the part of people of color and the physically challenged, especially on the Internet. It’s odd enough; it’s as though one movement is led by colored people, and the other movement is led by white people. There is thus the Civil Rights Movement, and the Independent Living Movement.
The former group is simply being led by other types of people than the latter group. It seems due to efforts on the part of both the left wing and the right wing of political participants, and so the disabled are led significantly by white men in wheelchairs at this point in time, in the year 2007. Dr. King’s face on the Great Seal doesn’t seem to have changed this any, although all of the city busses are now wheelchair accessible. Also, the days when the bus was “demarcated” for black people to be forced to ride in the back of the bus, with brown outlined windows signifying this, are over, as Mayor Norm Rice of Seattle went ahead and repainted the bus windows about a decade ago.
We had our usual struggles between racial groups, typical of what you may have seen before, and now the buses are almost fully together when it comes to human rights. There are still some odd issues involving Native American rights – there are municipal and county buses where an area is demarcated for “red” skinned people. I don’t know if anyone is ever going to change that, but I do know no one is forcing aboriginal people to ride in the backs of the buses – there are simply red outlined windows in the far back which are obviously more than a mere coincidence. No “Indians” are forced to sit back there, and I doubt much farther will be done about the bus painting arrangement.
It’s similar to the large red black and white “No Smoking” huge signs on the Washington State Ferry system’s large ferry boats; the symbol screams of being a swastika derivative, but nobody Jewish is making any complaints about it. People are too used to it to make any real fuss over something as subtle and hidden as such signs are in public. Nonetheless, the “brown skinned” population of Seattle may make a move against these signs, someday, if someone other than me finally sees them in their own clarity.
Chief Sealth, a Native American or aboriginal, was the brown of color man our Emerald City of Seattle in Washington State was named after, and he resides currently in a grave near an aboriginal people’s reservation. He was the leader of a tribe hereabouts, the name of which I have forgotten. He gave a wonderful “final” speech where he handed over his tribal lands, possibly the Duwamish were involved, and he asserted in a noble and peaceful way that “we” who now live here might be able to handle the privilege. I myself keep hoping someone will do something about those “red” demarcated bus windows. I’m sure Chief Sealth would not like his people to be stuck with such a set of circumstances. And I suppose the Jewish community may or may not ever do anything about the giant “No Smoking” swastika style signs on the ferry boats, against white skinned people.
But who is the true Chief of Seattle; is it the Mayor, or someone else? Many communities exist here in our lovely area, led by many an interested party or person. But what makes a person such a being of involvement? Is it his or her heart, or brains, or beaucoup bucks that do this, or the fact there must be someone for greatness to be thrust upon? What is “greatness” really – is it something that is simply there for certain people, in a certified and given time, in a definite and realistic way? And is greatness something achievable by just anyone, or is it only for specific people, ones who know what they are doing?
Someone – everyone needs to be “a somebody,” like Jesse Jackson, one of Dr. King’s own men in their times, once put it; he said that you really should become that somebody. In a way, that will always be my John Tyler, part Indian or Native American, part white man, who ruled one floor of a multi-story apartment building as a radical who fought for the rights and freedoms of the underprivileged handicapped American. He was ably assisted by one Jewish liberal named Ronald Gary Schwarz, who had been a Republican before he became disabled, and who when disabled, finally had found his life’s purpose was to assist those in wheelchairs to finally enable themselves to live their lives. These two blokes in wheelchairs were my mentors and friends when we are stayed at Center Park, there situated in the mostly Black People area of town, the Central Area.

The Probability of a Stop Loss Being Triggered
Posted by admin in Uncategorized on December 29th, 2009
Volatility-based stop loss placement can be optimized.
For some folks the next few paragraphs may be difficult reading. However, it is not necessary for you to get more than the general idea. If you like, scan over it quickly and move on to the paragraph after number 5 in the list that follows. On the other hand, if you can bear with us a moment, reading this should increase your understanding of why volatility-adjusted stop losses are among the best.
In a group of people that has a normal distribution of height measurements, the overall pattern of heights will distribute along a bell-shaped curve. Let’s go to the center of the bell curve and create a vertical dashed line from the base-line to the curve and label it “A. ” If you compute the average height, the computed average will be at A in our diagram. Add six more vertical dashed lines at equal distances along the base line to the right of line “A. ” Label them B, C, D, E, F, and G, respectively. A diagram can be seen at http://www. stockdisciplines. com/page/1539717. Assume that each dash in the vertical line under the bell curve at A represents a man who is 5′10″ or more in height and that this is the average height of 10,000 men in a sports arena. Let’s assume that these 10,000 men are represented by all the dashes under the curve but that most dashes are not shown (there are many vertical lines not drawn in the illustration). Those who are 2″ or more taller than those in column A are in column B. Those who are 2″ or more taller than those in column B are in column C, and so on with each column to the right representing men who are 2″ or more taller than the men in the previous column. By the time we get to column G we are talking about men who are about 6′10″ or taller. Obviously, men who would qualify to be in each subsequent column would be increasingly scarce.
Instead of thinking about those dashes as men of a certain height, now think of them as stock price spikes of a certain magnitude. Assume that downward spikes are to the right of A and upward spikes are to the left of A. For this discussion, we are interested only in downward spikes. Spikes that differ little from the average spike are near A and those that differ most are far from A. There are lots of small downward spikes that differ little from the average spike. They are located between A and B in the chart. As we move to the right on the A to G line, spikes get gradually larger. Though the spikes at C are larger than the spikes at A (like the taller men before), there are fewer of them. The very large spikes at E are fewer still. The even larger spikes at G are relatively rare. The height of the bell curve above any given location on the A to G line shows the frequency of spikes at that location.
Now we can think of the number of dashes under the bell curve at any given location between A and G as representing the probability that a spike of that magnitude will occur. As we will see in a moment, the probability that a spike will occur that is of sufficient magnitude to be at G is about 1. 3 in 1,000. As mentioned before, the larger the spike the farther it is to the right on the graph and the less likely it is to occur. Statisticians use a standard unit of measurement in marking off distances from point A (the average) on the graph. This unit is called the standard deviation. The purpose of the diagram is only to illustrate the standard deviation concept.
Let’s now think of the placement of the letters B through G in terms of standard deviation distances from A. Let’s assume the letters A, C, E, and G are placed one standard deviation apart so that the distance from A to G is 3 standard deviations. Thus, the distance from one letter to the next is ½ standard deviation. It is a fact of nature, just as Pi is the same regardless of the size of a circle, that whenever we measure a randomly selected group for some trait which each member of the group possesses in varying degree, we may expect most of the measurements to bunch around the average, while the remainder taper off gradually toward both extremes of the distribution forming a bell-shaped curve. This is known as “Gauss’s Law,” and it describes any “normal” distribution in nature. By using the standard deviation as a measure of variance, we can know the probability of finding trait measurements of any magnitude. For example, in any large normally distributed set of trait measurements we know that trait measurements that are ½ standard deviation or more greater than the average (B in the chart) will occur 30. 85% of the time. Again, this is a law of nature. Similarly, we know that 1. measurements 1 standard deviation or more greater than the average (C) occur 15. 87% of the time. 2. measurements 1. 5 standard deviations or more greater than the average (D) occur 6. 68% of the time, 3. measurements 2 standard deviations or more greater than the average (E) occur 2. 28% of the time, 4. measurements 2. 5 standard deviations or more greater than the average (F) occur . 62% of the time, and 5. measurements 3 standard deviations or more greater than the average (G) occur . 13% of the time.
Given this information, it is possible to approximate the probability of the occurrence of a price spike of a specific magnitude (as represented by its distance from the norm in standard deviations). The word “approximate” is used because stock price variations are not exactly “normally” distributed. Assume for a moment that stock price spikes precisely followed a “normal” distribution or bell curve. Then a stop loss that is set at 1. 5 standard deviations from the average price would be triggered approximately 6. 68% of the time (see list above). Assume that during the last 20 days there were no special events that inordinately influenced the stock and that the same conditions prevailed over the next 100 days. In that case, spikes large enough to trigger a stop loss set at 1. 5 standard deviations would probably occur about 6. 68 times in 100 days or about once every 15 days simply because of the normal volatility or “noise” in the stock’s behavior. If we use 2 standard deviations, then a spike large enough to trigger the stop would occur about once every 50 days.
To compute a volatility-adjusted stop loss, it is necessary to measure price spikes and the approximate frequencies at which price spikes of various magnitudes occur over a given time. Measuring the distances of each day’s high and low from the average price over a given period will yield the needed data. This information can be used to approximate the probability of the occurrence of a spike of a specific magnitude (as represented by its distance from the norm in standard deviations).
How does this help? If your holding period is projected to be one week, you don’t need a stop loss that has one chance in a thousand of being triggered. Probably, one chance in three weeks (1 in 15) or four weeks (1 in 20) would make sense. On the other hand, if your holding period is 1 year (253 market days), you might require an event that has only 1 chance in 500 of being triggered because of the stock’s “noise” or random fluctuations. By placing your stop loss the correct number of standard deviations away from the stock’s average price, you can make it highly improbable that your stop will be triggered merely by the random lurches of your stock. In other words, volatility-adjusted stops enable you to set your stop loss just outside the probable “event envelope” of the stock’s price behavior. Hence, your stop will not be triggered because of the normal fluctuations in price. It would take a downward price surge that is not “normal” for the stock to trigger your stop loss.

Set Up a Living Trust for the Sake of your Descendants
Posted by admin in Uncategorized on December 29th, 2009
Living trusts are usually set up so that any assets may be passed to inheritors or beneficiaries without necessarily going the probate way. Many people have experienced cases where, when owners of assets pass away, the beneficiaries fight over these assets just because there was no established living trust that will directly pass the assets to the real beneficiaries. They finally find themselves in the hands of the law and on legal courts where the court have to decide who takes what. Again the probate process may be expensive charging a fee according to what the deceased is considered worth.
An established living trust saves on time, money and is quite private comparing to probate process where you have heard cases where most the rich and famous after their granter died, so and so became richer for having been named the legal beneficiary. Living trusts may be expensive as a result of the federal estate tax levied. However a married couple can amazingly experience very low charges if they set up the tax with formula clause.
How do you establish a living trust? This involves an owner of an asset transferring the title of that asset from himself where he is a granter to a trustee of the trust to manage, for the benefit of himself and one other person. Also other lucky beneficiaries may be named after the granter dies where they can only get something when he dies.
A living trust may be personalized or corporate. With corporate trust, such as a bank is entrusted with the assets and the corporate trustees must show accurate and detailed records of all transactions that take place in the trust as long as it exists. Also the corporate trustees are entrusted to manage the investments held in the asset. The accounting of the trust are supposed to be presented to a court of law where need be.
With individual living trusts the granter presents a signed document (declaration of trust) where he names himself as a trustee and transfers assets to that trust. For this reason he/she is in full control of the assets. When the granter dies the person named in the trust automatically assumes the role. This process takes quite a short time and there is no much havoc of lawyers or courts in the process.
The living trusts differ from where you live. The US trusts may not be as of those of South Africa. The inter vivos trusts, testamentary trusts and bewind trusts. Depending on where you come from you need to get more information about the trusts so that you can have a general understanding. In most cases the living trust are under tax pressure but the main advantage is that the assets are protected from the hands of creditors if they are under a trust since the creditors can have no claim over the asset.
Establishing a living trust even though it may be expensive is a very important decision that saves your descendants from having to go through courts of law and overpaying for assets they could get for free right from you own very hands. Therefore start thinking in this direction.

Living Forward With Disaboom
Posted by admin in Uncategorized on December 27th, 2009
Recently I was asked to explain how I came up with the name for “Disaboom,” an online resource that combines medical information, lifestyle articles, resources, and community for people with disabilities and those whose lives are touched by disability. (And yes, it’s true, I’ve been asked that question roughly 5,000 times since we launched last summer!)
My idea was that for many of us, disability changes everything we had thought we knew about our lives pre-disability. Who we were, what we would do in our lives, the nature of our relationships with those we love and who love us, what we could expect our bodies to do. In a way, a disabling illness or injury “blew up” our previous assumptions, and challenged us to create a new set of expectations: of ourselves, our friends and family, our communities. Thus the “boom” of disability.
But I also believe in the “boom” of positive energy that can accompany change, and wanted to incorporate that idea of explosive energy in our name to signify my belief in the importance of living forward in any way, in any moment, that we can.
As someone who sustained a C-7 spinal cord injury while skiing in my twenties, I know what it feels like to have that bomb go off in your life, blowing up everything that defined who you thought you were. And I know the effort and energy it takes to choose to live forward: going through medical school in a wheelchair was one of the most difficult things I could have chosen to do.
But I was determined to achieve my new goal, which was to become an expert medical practitioner working with rehab patients, and to find ways to help others live forward despite (or even because of) the disabilities they lived with. I love the work I do, and my “disability” has enabled me to contribute to the world in ways I never would have considered before I headed down that ski slope. So “Disaboom” is my way of acknowledging all of the ways a disability can both blow up and energize our lives.
What is Disaboom? I think of it as the resource I wish I’d had when I suffered that spinal cord injury 18 years ago. I was lucky enough to have a loving family and a great group of friends that assisted me in my recovery. However, my most invaluable resource was not healthcare officials or counselors, but two men with a condition similar to mine that I met by chance at my apartment complex. While we sat around the pool shooting the breeze, these men taught me the ‘real’ information I needed to know; such as what kind of wheelchairs were best, how to travel comfortably, the adjustments I’d need to make to have a family, and much, much, more.
Now that I’ve gone on to become a doctor, I have all the medical knowledge of the world at my fingertips. But, I still find I learn most from the everyday experiences of those with disabilities. Luckily, at disaboom. com, you don’t have to choose between medical advice and real world advice, because the Disaboom team works hard every day to provide the best of both worlds.
In our Health section, you’ll find comprehensive overviews of a wide variety of conditions. In our Living section, you can read stories about Paralympians, actors, musicians, and others who have refused to let their disabilities prevent them from achieving their dreams, as well as articles about disability-related legislation, caregiving, education issues, and much more. Lastly, in our Community section, members create content and conversation with the messages that mean the most to them. Our members include a broad range of nationalities, professions, and ages. But we also find that many of our most passionate members don’t, in fact, have a disability themselves – they are instead caregivers, doctors, and friends or relatives who want to understand and support those they care about.
Bottom line for me: The word ‘disability’ may apply to us, but it will never define us. We decide who we are, and what lives we will create. My goal with disaboom. com has been to provide the information, community, and connection that will enable people to choose the life path that supports their new goals and dreams – and determine in what way they will choose to live forward.
Assisted Living: Aging in Place
Posted by admin in Uncategorized on December 27th, 2009
For the nation’s growing number of elderly, assisted living facilities have become popular alternatives to nursing homes. Most people move into assisted living when they need just a little care, or simply don’t want to manage a house. But then people age, they get more frail, they develop Alzheimer’s disease. Ruth Elroy, 87, is a resident at an assisted living apartment facility in Phoenix, Arizona. Her daughter, Cindy Maracay, says assisted living allows her mother to live with a degree of comfort she could not find in a nursing home. “It’s dignity. It’s independence. It’s freedom to shape your own lifestyle. That’s what assisted living is supposed to be about. It’s not a nursing home,” she says. Cindy agonizes over how to break the news to her mother that she’s being evicted. Ruth has Alzheimer’s disease, and the facility’s administration recently informed Cindy, Ruth‘s only child, that the elderly woman’s medical needs “exceeds the level of care we can provide as an assisted living community. “”This is a nightmare,” Cindy says. “This can’t be happening to my mother in Phoenix, Arizona. “Cindy was faced with a tough decision, until recently when she found out about assisted living homes, an arrangement where assisted living is provided in a residential home like environment for elderly who need care from the early stages also allows for the resident to age in place as their level of care increases. Assisted living homes in Arizona are state licensed and regulated, from five or ten residents offering assistance for elderly in all levels of care. Much like nursing homes, assisted living homes provide equivalent levels of care, prices are usually at half the cost, yet residents in assisted living homes have the freedom and independence they want to choose in the comfort of a residential house. Assisted living homes also have a high staff to resident ratio which allows for a more individualized level of care per resident. Meals are home cooked, many assisted living homes offer a variety of daily activities and exercises and even weekly. Cindy found out about North Valley Assisted Living – an assisted living home in Phoenix, Arizona from a friend who also had their mother cared for there and were extremely pleased with the services she received. Cindy enjoys peace of mind knowing her mother Ruth will now be able to age in place as her level of care will change. North Valley Assisted Living is licensed for ten residents in the State of Arizona and has been providing quality assisted living since 1993 in the Phoenix valley and have since established a great reputation in the community.
Are you looking for an Assisted Living Home in Phoenix, Arizona? Desert Comfort Assisted Living is their second residence they recently opened which has openings for private rooms. Visit www. desertcomfortaz. com to view photos or contact them for information on the care they offer.
How to Improve Your Memory
Posted by admin in Uncategorized on December 26th, 2009
How to Improve Your MemoryWouldn’t it be nice to just look at a page and never forget what was on there? What if you could never again forget a friend’s birthday? The bad news is, not everyone has a photographic memory, otherwise known as eidetic memory. Only a few actually have it, the rest rely on mnemonic devices. The good news, however, is that everyone can take steps to improve their memory, and with time and practice most people can gain the ability to memorize seemingly impossible amounts of information. Whether you want to win the World Memory Championships, ace your history test, or simply remember where you put your keys, this article can get you started. Steps 1. Convince yourself that you do have a good memory that will improve. Too many people get stuck here and convince themselves that their memory is bad, that they are just not good with names, that numbers just slip out of their minds for some reason. Erase those thoughts and vow to improve your memory. Commit yourself to the task and bask in your achievements — it’s hard to keep motivated if you beat yourself down every time you make a little bit of progress. 2. Exercise your brain. Regularly “exercising” the brain keeps it growing and spurs the development of new nerve connections that can help improve memory. By developing new mental skills—especially complex ones such as learning a new language or learning to play a new musical instrument—and challenging your brain with puzzles and games you can keep your brain active and improve its physiological functioning. Try some puzzle exercises everyday such as word cross, sudoku and some other games as easy to put into your mobile phone and practice it maybe once for 30 minutes per day. 3. Exercise daily. Regular aerobic exercise improves circulation and efficiency throughout the body, including in the brain, and can help ward off the memory loss that comes with aging. Exercise also makes you more alert and relaxed, and can thereby improve your memory uptake, allowing you to take better mental “pictures. ” 4. Reduce stress. Chronic stress, although it does not physically damage the brain, can make remembering much more difficult. After prolonged stress the brain will be damaged. Stressful situations are recognized by the hypothalamus, which in turn signals the pituitary gland. The pituitary gland secreted adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH)which influences the adrenal glands to secrete adrenaline and later cortisol(corticosteroids). The corticosteroids can weaken the blood-brain barrier and damage the hippocampus(the memory center). Ironically, the hippocampus controls the secretion of the hormone released by the hypothalamus through a process of negative feedback. After chronic stress it will be damaged and it will not be as efficient in regulating the degenerative corticosteroids and memory will be harmed. Neurogenesis (formation of new neurons) indeed exists in the hippocampus but stress inhibits it. To recapitulate and synthesis, chronic stress will affect your health and your memory, it will damage the brain so the best option is to learn to control stress. Stress will never be eliminated, but it definitely can be controlled. [http://ezinearticles. com/?How-Stress-Effects-Neurotransmitters&id=19510]Even temporary stresses can make it more difficult to effectively focus on concepts and observe things. Try to relax, regularly practice yoga or other stretching exercises, and see a doctor if you have severe chronic stress as soon as possible. 5. Eat well and eat right. There are a lot of herbal supplements on the market that claim to improve memory, but none have yet been shown to be effective in clinical tests (although small studies have shown some promising results for ginkgo biloba and phosphatidylserine). A healthy diet, however, contributes to a healthy brain, and foods containing antioxidants—broccoli, blueberries, spinach, and berries, for example—and Omega-3 fatty acids appear to promote healthy brain functioning. Feed your brain with such supplements as Thiamine, Vitamin E, Niacin and Vitamin B-6. Grazing, eating 5 or 6 small meals throughout the day instead of 3 large meals, also seems to improve mental functioning (including memory) by limiting dips in blood sugar, which may negatively affect the brain. 6. Take better pictures. Often we forget things not because our memory is bad, but rather because our observational skills need work. One common situation where this occurs (and which almost everyone can relate to) is meeting new people. Often we don’t really learn people’s names at first because we aren’t really concentrating on remembering them. You’ll find that if you make a conscious effort to remember such things, you’ll do much better. One way to train yourself to be more observant is to look at an unfamiliar photograph for a few seconds and then turn the photograph over and describe or write down as many details as you can about the photograph. Try closing your eyes and picturing the photo in your mind. Use a new photograph each time you try this exercise, and with regular practice you will find you’re able to remember more details with even shorter glimpses of the photos. 7. Give yourself time to form a memory. Memories are very fragile in the short-term, and distractions can make you quickly forget something as simple as a phone number. The key to avoid losing memories before you can even form them is to be able to focus on the thing to be remembered for a while without thinking about other things, so when you’re trying to remember something, avoid distractions and complicated tasks for a few minutes. 8. Create vivid, memorable images. You remember information more easily if you can visualize it. If you want to associate a child with a book, try not to visualize the child reading the book – that’s too simple and forgettable. Instead, come up with something more jarring, something that sticks, like the book chasing the child, or the child eating the book. It’s your mind – make the images as shocking and emotional as possible to keep the associations strong. 9. Repeat things you need to learn. The more times you hear, see, or think about something, the more surely you’ll remember it, right? It’s a no-brainer. When you want to remember something, be it your new coworker’s name or your best friend’s birthday, repeat it, either out loud or silently. Try writing it down; think about it. 10. Group things you need to remember. Random lists of things (a shopping list, for example) can be especially difficult to remember. To make it easier, try categorizing the individual things from the list. If you can remember that, among other things, you wanted to buy four different kinds of vegetables, you’ll find it easier to remember all four. 11. Organize your life. Keep items that you frequently need, such as keys and eyeglasses, in the same place every time. Use an electronic organizer or daily planner to keep track of appointments, due dates for bills, and other tasks. Keep phone numbers and addresses in an address book or enter them into your computer or cell phone. Improved organization can help free up your powers of concentration so that you can remember less routine things. Even if being organized doesn’t improve your memory, you’ll receive a lot of the same benefits (i. e. you won’t have to search for your keys anymore). 12. Try meditation. Research now suggests that people who regularly practice “mindfulness” meditation are able to focus better and may have better memories. Mindfulness (also known as awareness or insight meditation) is the type commonly practiced in Western countries and is easy to learn. Studies at Massachusetts General Hospital show that regular meditation thickens the cerebral cortex in the brain by increasing the blood flow to that region. Some researchers believe this can enhance attention span, focus, and memory. 13. Sleep well. The amount of sleep we get affects the brain’s ability to recall recently learned information. Getting a good night’s sleep – a minimum of seven hours a night – may improve your short-term memory and long-term relational memory, according to recent studies conducted at the Harvard Medical School. 14. Build your memorization arsenal. Learn pegs, memory palaces, and the Dominic System. These techniques form the foundation for mnemonic techniques, and will visibly improve your memory. 15. Venture out and learn from your mistakes. Go ahead and take a stab at memorizing the first one hundred digits of pi, or, if you’ve done that already, the first one thousand. Memorize the monarchs of England through your memory palaces, or your grocery list through visualization. Through diligent effort you will eventually master the art of memorization. Tips * Most people’s brains are not very good at remembering abstract information, such as numbers. This is one of the things that separate those with eidetic memory from those with a great, normal memory. The key to being able to recall such things is to build associations and links that evoke the memory. This is why almost anybody with normal brain functioning can dramatically improve their ability to recall things using mnemonics. While building a memory palace, for example, actually requires that you “remember” more, by associating the thing to be remembered with other things (emotions, other memories, images, etc. ) you build more mental “links” to the memory, thus making it easier to access. * A large number of memory improvement products are available (a search on the internet will produce hundreds of such products). Most of these products actually teach you mnemonic strategies, and while some are no doubt bunk, some are legitimate. * One easy method to help you remember people’s names is to look at the person when you are introduced and say the person’s name: “Nice to meet you, Bill. ” * Try memorizing the order of a deck of playing cards. Although this may seem like a pointless task, it will allow you to discover memorization techniques that work best for you. * Try a tray of objects (say, 10 objects). Study them for 30 seconds. Take the tray away and write down all the objects you can. Increase the number of items for more mind excercise. Or get someone else to find the objects on the tray; this makes them harder to remember and will test you more. * Put black ink at the end of your palm to remember any important thing for the next day or for that day itself. Whenever you see the black dot, you’ll remember what to do. * Visualize whatever you have to do as part of something you see every day. For example, if you have to give your dog some medicine, visualize your dog in your fridge every time you walk past it or look inside. This will keep your dog fresh in your mind. * Write the event or task down immediately. If you don’t have a pen, one thing you can do is change the time on your watch; later on you will remember why it is set at the wrong time. You could also wear your watch upside down. * Write in a diary or journal every day without fail. Even small issues should be written down — this is a good way to make sure you don’t miss anything. * Leave yourself a telephone message reminding yourself of important “to do” tasks. * Memorize your favorite song or poem until you can say it to yourself without any help. Try to do this often. * A study by Harvard University shows that people who sleep tend to remember things better. So sleep and see how much you remember things better. Warnings * If you notice a severe or sudden deterioration of memory, talk to your doctor immediately. Sometimes “senior moments” can be precursors to Alzheimer’s disease or dementia. * Exercise due diligence when purchasing a memory improvement product. Find out as much as you can about how the program works, and do your own research to determine if it will work for you. Some of these products are simply scams. Be especially wary of products that promise to improve your memory instantly or with little or no effort: effective strategies to improve recall take time and practice. * While some herbal supplements that claim to improve memory may in fact work, there is no conclusive evidence that any of these are effective. Most are harmless, however, and may be worth a try, but exercise caution: some supplements can have harmful effects, and not all contain what they say they contain.
